Glad you're getting into the fun stuff now. As far as WordPress themes, I have to give my highest recommendation to Thesis. The support forums and the sheer number of people who do great Thesis customizations make it worth using. With that being said, I've also used Frugal theme (on my freewordpressinstall.com site) and it's great as well. I definitely would give the edge to Thesis, but Frugal is not a bad choice at all.
