Our Self-Employment Progress This Week

update1Guess what? We actually began doing some of the fun stuff we’ve been looking forward to doing. YES! Over the past few months, we’ve been so busy planning, and checking off all the boring (but absolutely necessary) steps needed to start off with really strong business foundations.

If you are starting a work-from-home business and you’ve chosen the path (rather, adventure) of starting an LLC and all that goes with it, I suggest you keep up with our weekly progress reports. You’ll get a really good overview of the process as we share what we’re doing every week toward starting our own online businesses. But what’s more important, don’t just read what we’re doing, go out there and start a business online. So many people say they want to but don’t know where to start. Well, HERE is the place to start…and NOW is the time to start! Our progress this week was comprised of the following:

  • I registered my fictitious name (at the county level)
  • More health insurance research
  • Researched WordPress themes
  • Studied at the Internet Business Mastery Academy

Registered a Fictitious Name

Since I’m starting an online business and will sell products through my website, I’ve registered my domain name as a fictitious name or DBA (doing business as) for my LLC. That’s basically a way of officially saying, “hey, I’m doing business as behaviorandmotivation.com on behalf of New Mind Insight, LLC.” By the way, I don’t think I’ve mentioned it yet, but New Mind Insight, LLC is the name of my company and behaviorandmotivation.com will be the website I’ll be launching soon. :-)

Health Insurance Stuff

I spoke with a local health insurance broker this week. We’re still exploring the possibility of starting a two-person group health insurance plan with either Earthen Motion LLC, or New Mind Insight, LLC as the employer. As I understand it, setting our health insurance up this way would mean our health insurance coverage would be a “guaranteed issue” plan. One broker I spoke with recently said that this type of plan would bypass any worker’s compensation and preexisting condition issues and guarantee coverage for them. I’m still very skeptical. Another broker said that this would only mean your coverage is guaranteed if you haven’t had a lapse of coverage longer than 63 days. Of course, I’ll let you know how this turns out.

WordPress Themes Research

This week, we spend some time researching WordPress Themes. We have chosen 4 leading contenders. Tammy wrote about this in her post, Four WordPress Themes You Shouldn’t Miss.  Both Headway and Frugal theme captured our attention with their ease flexibility of customization. Though we’re leaning toward Headway, we’ve become aware that Frugal, Headway and Affiliate themes will all be releasing major updates soon. So we’re going to reserve our final decision until we review the updates.

Internet Business Mastery Academy (IBMA)

In course 6 this week, we learned about building a loyal community. As usual, the hours of audio files, the documents, videos, and action steps have painted a clear, step-by-step plan on how to do it right. Both Tammy and I love the learn-at-your-own-pace style of the Academy. Since I’m still working a full-time job, starting my business in my spare time is perfect. And though I’m anxious and would love to snap my fingers and instantly have my business going and my website launched, even Sterling and Jay can’t pull off that magic…but almost.

Next Week

Tammy and I will sit down with a CPA. We’re actually really looking forward to that. More health insurance shenanigans will be had. I have to file my fictitious name with the SCC (State Corporation Commission). We will, hopefully, choose a theme for our blogs. And last, but not least, we’ll study IBMA course 7 and learn about creating compelling content on our blogs. I’m really looking forward to that lesson. More good stuff to come. Stay tuned…

Hey guys! Glad you’re getting into the fun stuff now. As far as WordPress themes, I have to give my highest recommendation to Thesis. The support forums and the sheer number of people who do great Thesis customizations make it worth using. With that being said, I’ve also used Frugal theme (on my freewordpressinstall.com site) and it’s great as well. I definitely would give the edge to Thesis, but Frugal is not a bad choice at all. Glad to see that everything is going well!
